Chapter 6

It was the shower that woke me next morning. The familiar patter of running water tore me from the sweet bliss of sleep, and I opened my eyes to find myself lying face down in the tangled sheets. The sun was already far up into the sky, its powerful rays having hours ago driven away the darkness of night. For a moment, I blinked, my eyes still heavy with sleep, and tried to decide whether I really wanted to get up yet.

I drew a deep breath and turned my head to look at the alarm clock on the bedside table. 10:38 AM. Damn! I couldn’t remember the last time I had slept so late. Oh, what the hell! I thought. It’s supposed to be a vacation!

I rolled over to my left to find that I was alone in the king-sized bed. Of course, I was alone. The closed door and the telltale sound of the shower meant that Jenny was in the bathroom, rinsing away the stickiness of last night’s lovemaking. Last night! Oh shit! I’d told her!

I was suddenly wide-awake. I sat up and vigorously rubbed my scalp with both hands. What would she think? What would she say? Had I ruined things between us? Oh fuck! She’d think I was a pervert!

Just as I was talking myself into a full-fledged panic attack, the shower stopped. A minute later, my wife walked into the room with a towel tied around her. Her wet hair hung loose behind her, trailing its way in damp tendrils between her shoulder blades to the middle of her back.

“Good morning!” she beamed. “It’s about time you got up!”

“Good morning,” I replied, eyeing her warily.

Any second, the other shoe was going to drop. I just knew it. She’d be angry with me, disappointed. Maybe she’d want a divorce. When she opened her mouth to speak, I steeled myself, expecting the worst.

“The hotel manager called about 15 minutes ago. He said that the curator of the local museum would be happy to take you on a little tour of the local architectural sights this afternoon.”

“This afternoon?” I asked stupidly. Wasn’t she going to say anything about last night?

“Uh huh! I told him 1 o’clock would be fine. That’ll leave us enough time to grab a quick lunch before you go.”

“Um… yeah. Okay. Thanks for setting that up for me.” I rubbed my face, then swung my legs over the side of the bed and stood, stretching my arms above my head and groaning.

“No problem!” she asked cheerily.

“So, what are your plans today?”

“Well, for starters, there’s a little art gallery down the street I want to check out. Supposed to be really nice. After that, I’m going to do a little shopping at one of the boutiques Carlos recommended and then, I guess, just lay around and catch a few rays on the beach!”

“Hmm. Sounds fun!”

“I sure hope so. But Ken?”

“Yeah?”

“Hurry up and grab a shower, baby,” she tossed her head toward the open door behind her.
